Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version: this interaction is really about the thyroid extract, not the uridine triacetate. Like any oral medicine taken at the same time as thyroid hormone, uridine triacetate could get in the way of how well your body absorbs the thyroid hormone. That can make the thyroid product work less reliably.

The good news is that uridine triacetate (Xuriden, Vistogard) is usually a short, emergency or scheduled treatment, so this overlap is brief and the concern here is rated minor. Uridine triacetate itself isn't really weakened by thyroid extract. Still, since these supplements are unpredictable, I'd loop in your doctor or pharmacist so they can sort out timing and make sure your real thyroid treatment stays on track.

About Uridine Triacetate

What Is Uridine Triacetate Used For?

Brand names: Xuriden, Vistogard

Uridine triacetate is available as two different products for two distinct uses. Vistogard is used for emergency treatment after an overdose of the chemotherapy drugs fluorouracil or capecitabine — or when someone develops severe, early, or life-threatening side effects from those drugs (such as heart or nervous system problems, severe digestive reactions, or a dangerous drop in white blood cells) within 96 hours of their last dose.

Xuriden is used to treat hereditary orotic aciduria, a rare inherited condition in which the body cannot make enough of a building block called uridine, causing a buildup of orotic acid and problems with blood cell production and other body functions. Both products are approved for adults and children.
