Triamcinolone falls under TOPICAL DRUGS — the group Turpentine Oil interacts with.

Some in vitro research shows that alpha-pinene, the major constituent of turpentine oil, does not increase the absorption of chlorpromazine or haloperidol when applied topically. However, animal research shows that turpentine oil increases the absorption of ibuprofen when applied topically. Theoretically, applying turpentine oil to the skin along with other medications might increase the effects and side effects of these medications.

Here's the gist for topical triamcinolone: turpentine oil acts as a skin penetration enhancer. In animal studies it pushed more of a topical medicine (ibuprofen) through the skin, so the worry is that layering it over your triamcinolone cream could let more steroid soak in than intended.

If that happened, you might see more of triamcinolone's local effects, like skin thinning, irritation, or color changes where you apply it. Keep in mind this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal data, not human studies, so it's not a strong alarm. Still, turpentine oil itself is irritating, so I wouldn't combine the two on the same patch of skin without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Turpentine oil is a strong-smelling pine resin product used mostly in tiny amounts in topical rubs for muscle aches and congestion. It can be dangerous and even deadly if swallowed, and reliable evidence for health benefits is very limited. Never drink turpentine oil, and only use diluted, purified products on the skin with care.

What Is Triamcinolone Used For?

Triamcinolone is available in many forms — injections, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, dental pastes, and eye injections — each approved for specific uses. Injectable forms given into muscle are used when oral steroids aren't an option, covering severe allergies (like asthma flares, severe skin reactions, drug reactions, and serum sickness), serious skin diseases, certain endocrine (hormonal) disorders, and more.

Injections given directly into a joint (intra-articular) or soft tissue help with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout flares, bursitis, and tendon inflammation. Injections into skin lesions (intralesional) treat conditions such as keloids, alopecia areata, and psoriatic plaques. Triesence (an ophthalmic injection) is specifically indicated for eye conditions like uveitis and temporal arteritis, and for visualization during eye surgery. Topical creams, ointments, lotions, and sprays relieve itching and inflammation from corticosteroid-responsive skin conditions. Dental paste forms (Oralone, Kourzeq) treat painful mouth sores from injury. Nasal sprays temporarily relieve hay fever and upper respiratory allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and congestion.
