Here's the simple version: both valerian and Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil) can have a calming, sedating effect on your brain. When you take them together, those effects may stack up. So you might feel sleepier, more relaxed, dizzy, or a little foggy or unsteady than you'd expect from either one alone. That matters most if you're driving, going up and down stairs, or caring for someone.

I'll be honest about the evidence here. This concern comes mainly from lab and animal research, not strong human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Many people tolerate the combo fine, but everyone reacts differently. Before you pair valerian with your Horizant, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and go easy until you know how the two affect you together.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand name: Horizant

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
