Valerian and Topiramate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Topiramate

Topiramate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Valerian interacts with.

Valerian can have additive sedative effects when used concomitantly with CNS depressant drugs.
Theoretically, concomitant use of valerian and drugs with sedative and anesthetic properties may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Valerian and Topamax (topiramate): this isn't about one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, both can have a calming, sedating effect on the brain, so stacking them may add up. Topiramate on its own can already make people feel drowsy, foggy, slow-thinking, or dizzy, and valerian may nudge those same feelings a little stronger.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and comes from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it may never be noticeable for you. Still, if you do try valerian, go easy at first and watch for extra sleepiness or trouble concentrating, especially before driving. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.
