Vanadium and Anisindione

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Anisindione

Anisindione falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Vanadium interacts with.

Theoretically, vanadium might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the sodium orthovanadate form of vanadium prolongs clotting time, likely through inhibition of thrombin and factor Xa.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Anisindione (Miradon) is an older blood thinner, in the same family as warfarin, that works by slowing your body's ability to form clots. The concern here is simple: vanadium may have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own. In lab studies (test tube only), one form of vanadium slowed clotting by blocking some of the proteins your body uses to make a clot. Stacking that on top of a drug already designed to thin your blood could, in theory, tip you toward too much thinning.

What that might look like in real life: easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that takes longer to stop. To be clear, this is theoretical and based only on lab work, not people. Still, since Anisindione is tricky to dose, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any vanadium supplement.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Anisindione page

“Anisindione (Miradon) thins the blood to prevent dangerous clots, and blood thinners leave little room between not enough effect and too much bleeding, so this list deserves real care. Of the 218 supplements and herbs on file, 202 can push its anticoagulant effect further and raise bleeding risk.”

About Vanadium

What is Vanadium?

Vanadium
  • Blood sugar and diabetes support
  • Athletic performance and muscle building
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • General trace-mineral supplementation

Vanadium is a trace mineral found in tiny amounts in food, and people get plenty from a normal diet. Supplement claims for diabetes, weight, and athletic performance are not well proven, and higher doses can be toxic. Most people do not need to supplement it, and you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
