Vanadium and Ketoprofen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Ketoprofen

Ketoprofen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Vanadium interacts with.

Theoretically, vanadium might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the sodium orthovanadate form of vanadium prolongs clotting time, likely through inhibition of thrombin and factor Xa.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea with ketoprofen and vanadium. Ketoprofen is an NSAID, and like other drugs in that family it already makes your platelets a bit less sticky, which can raise bleeding risk a little on its own. In lab studies (test tube research, not people), one form of vanadium slowed how fast blood clots by interfering with clotting proteins. So in theory, pairing the two could nudge your bleeding risk a touch higher.

What might that look like in real life? Things like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset and bleeding, which ketoprofen can cause anyway. To be fair, this is weak, theoretical evidence, and the vanadium you get from a normal diet is unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ketoprofen page

“Bleeding is what worries me most with ketoprofen (Orudis, Oruvail Gel). As an NSAID, it already irritates the stomach lining and slows clotting, and 202 of the 252 supplements and herbs on this page can push that bleeding risk further.”

About Vanadium

What is Vanadium?

Vanadium
  • Blood sugar and diabetes support
  • Athletic performance and muscle building
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • General trace-mineral supplementation

Vanadium is a trace mineral found in tiny amounts in food, and people get plenty from a normal diet. Supplement claims for diabetes, weight, and athletic performance are not well proven, and higher doses can be toxic. Most people do not need to supplement it, and you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.

About Ketoprofen

What Is Ketoprofen Used For?

Brand names: Orudis, Oruvail Gel, Powergel, Oruvail Injection

Ketoprofen capsules (including the Orudis brand) are approved for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, general pain management, and primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods). Ketoprofen extended-release capsules are approved for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis only — they are not recommended for acute pain because of their slow-release design.

Regardless of formulation, the goal is always to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
