Daunorubicin Hydrochloride falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Vitamin C interacts with.

Theoretically, the antioxidant effects of vitamin C might reduce the effectiveness of antitumor antibiotics.
The use of antioxidants like vitamin C during chemotherapy is controversial. There is concern that antioxidants could reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs which generate free radicals, such as doxorubicin. In contrast, some researchers theorize that antioxidants might make chemotherapy more effective by reducing oxidative stress that could interfere with apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as vitamin C have on chemotherapy.

Here's the thinking behind this one. Daunorubicin is one of those chemo drugs that partly works by creating free radicals, unstable molecules that damage and kill leukemia cells. Since vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it mops up free radicals, the worry is that high-dose vitamin C could blunt some of daunorubicin's punch. That said, this is purely theoretical. We don't have solid human studies showing it actually weakens your treatment, and some researchers even argue antioxidants might help.

The everyday food you eat, an orange or some veggies, is not the concern here. The question is about concentrated vitamin C pills. Because the stakes are so high with cancer treatment, please don't start any vitamin C supplement without first checking with your oncology team. They'd rather you ask.

What Is Daunorubicin Used For?

Brand name: Cerubidine

Daunorubicin Hydrochloride Injection is used to help bring about remission — meaning a significant reduction or disappearance of leukemia cells — in people with certain types of leukemia. It is always given in combination with other approved anticancer drugs, not alone.

Specifically, it is approved for remission induction in acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (including the myelogenous, monocytic, and erythroid subtypes) in adults, and for remission induction in acute lymphocytic leukemia in both children and adults.
