Mitoxantrone falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Vitamin C interacts with.

Theoretically, the antioxidant effects of vitamin C might reduce the effectiveness of antitumor antibiotics.
The use of antioxidants like vitamin C during chemotherapy is controversial. There is concern that antioxidants could reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs which generate free radicals, such as doxorubicin. In contrast, some researchers theorize that antioxidants might make chemotherapy more effective by reducing oxidative stress that could interfere with apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as vitamin C have on chemotherapy.

Here's the thinking behind this one. Mitoxantrone is thought to work, in part, by creating unstable molecules called free radicals that damage and kill cancer cells. Since vitamin C is an antioxidant, the worry is that high doses could mop up some of those free radicals and, in theory, blunt how well mitoxantrone works. So the concern points toward a possible weaker treatment effect, not more side effects.

I want to be honest, though: this is purely theoretical, based on how these drugs behave on paper, not on solid human studies. The everyday vitamin C you get from food and a normal diet is very unlikely to matter. The real question is high-dose supplements during treatment. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Check with your oncology team or pharmacist first, since they can give advice that fits your exact treatment.

What Is Mitoxantrone Injection Used For?

Brand name: Novantrone

Mitoxantrone Injection is used to reduce neurologic disability and the frequency of relapses in adults with secondary progressive, progressive relapsing, or worsening relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). It is not indicated for primary progressive MS.

Mitoxantrone Injection, in combination with corticosteroids, is also used as initial chemotherapy for pain related to advanced hormone-refractory prostate cancer. In combination with other approved drugs, it is used in the initial treatment of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) in adults, which includes several subtypes such as myelogenous, promyelocytic, monocytic, and erythroid acute leukemias.
