Wasabi and Zolmitriptan

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Zolmitriptan and Wasabi in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Wasabi safety at a glance

Wasabi overall Use caution Generally safe as a food, but supplement-strength doses are not well studied in people.
Pregnancy Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but avoid concentrated supplements due to a lack of safety data.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but supplement doses have not been studied, so caution is best.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Zolmitriptan

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Zolmitriptan is filed under 4 classifications — including qt interval-prolonging drugs, serotonergic drugs, serotonergic drugs. Wasabi has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Zolmitriptan’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Wasabi Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Zolmitriptan. It is the side-effect record for Wasabi on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Wasabi, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Wasabi — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Zolmitriptan’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Zolmitriptan column appears here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Zolmitriptan page

“Zolmitriptan (Zomig) treats migraines by working on serotonin and tightening blood vessels, and that mechanism is exactly why this list deserves real vigilance. Twenty of the 50 supplements on file, including everyday items like 5-HTP and black cohosh, also raise serotonin, and stacking them on a triptan can push someone toward seroton…”

About Wasabi

What is Wasabi?

Wasabi
  • Flavoring for sushi and other foods
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Antioxidant support
  • General immune support

Wasabi is best known as the pungent green condiment served with sushi, made from a Japanese plant in the cabbage family. Its natural compounds (isothiocyanates) show antimicrobial and antioxidant activity in lab studies, but there is very little human research to support taking it as a supplement. As a food it is generally safe; as a concentrated supplement, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Wasabi is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Wasabi record says about it on its own.

About Zolmitriptan

What Is Zolmitriptan Used For?

Brand name: Zomig

Zolmitriptan is used to treat migraine headaches as they happen — it is not a daily preventive medication. Tablets (including Zomig tablets) and orally disintegrating tablets are approved for acute migraine treatment in adults. Zolmitriptan nasal spray and Zomig Nasal Spray are also approved for adults and for adolescents 12 years of age and older.

It works for migraines with or without aura (the visual or sensory changes some people get before a headache). It is not approved for cluster headaches, and it should only be used once a migraine diagnosis has been clearly established by a healthcare provider.
