Zolmitriptan falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the concern with pairing ephedra (ma huang) and zolmitriptan (Zomig). Ephedra is a strong stimulant that can speed up the heart, raise blood pressure, and even nudge the heart's electrical rhythm by stretching out the QT interval on an EKG. Zolmitriptan is a triptan that already works by tightening blood vessels, so stacking a powerful stimulant on top can add real strain on your heart and rhythm.

Together they could raise the risk of chest tightness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, spikes in blood pressure, and rarely dangerous rhythm problems. The QT part is somewhat theoretical for this combo, but ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. Please don't use ephedra, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer migraine options.

About Zolmitriptan

What Is Zolmitriptan Used For?

Brand name: Zomig

Zolmitriptan is used to treat migraine headaches as they happen — it is not a daily preventive medication. Tablets (including Zomig tablets) and orally disintegrating tablets are approved for acute migraine treatment in adults. Zolmitriptan nasal spray and Zomig Nasal Spray are also approved for adults and for adolescents 12 years of age and older.

It works for migraines with or without aura (the visual or sensory changes some people get before a headache). It is not approved for cluster headaches, and it should only be used once a migraine diagnosis has been clearly established by a healthcare provider.
