Disopyramide Phosphate falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the heart of it: disopyramide already stretches out a part of your heartbeat called the QT interval. That's actually how it calms abnormal rhythms, but it also means there isn't much wiggle room. Ephedra (with its stimulant ephedrine) can lengthen the QT interval too and stir up extra heartbeats, even at normal doses in healthy people.

Stack the two together and you nudge that risk higher, which can lead to dangerous rhythms like a fast, chaotic heartbeat (a real concern with this drug). Ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason, and I wouldn't pair it with disopyramide. Please don't change your heart medicine on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer choices first.

What Is Disopyramide Used For?

Brand names: Norpace CR, Norpace

Disopyramide — available as Disopyramide Phosphate, Norpace, and Norpace CR — is indicated for the treatment of documented ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia (a fast, dangerous heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers), that a physician judges to be life-threatening.

Because of its potential to worsen heart rhythm problems, it is generally not recommended for lesser arrhythmias, and it should not be used to treat ventricular premature contractions (extra heartbeats) that cause no symptoms. Treatment is typically started in a hospital setting.
