Here's the simple version: amphetamine is already a strong stimulant. It speeds up your heart, can raise your blood pressure, and pushes your body into that revved-up "fight or flight" mode. Ephedra (ma huang) does almost the exact same thing. So you'd essentially be stacking two stimulants on top of each other, and the effects can add up fast.

That combination can mean a racing or pounding heart, a real spike in blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, and chest discomfort. In serious cases it has been linked to dangerous heart rhythms or stroke. The evidence here is mostly anecdotal, but the concern is well-founded given what both substances do. Ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements anyway. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything stimulant-like with your amphetamine.

Amphetamine also falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs).

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of serious adverse effects.
Concomitant use of ephedra with MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertension or hypotension, hyperpyrexia, hallucinations, convulsions, rhabdomyolysis, and urinary problems.

Here's the simple version: both ephedra and amphetamine are stimulants that rev up your 'fight or flight' system. When you stack two stimulants together, their effects can pile on top of each other. With amphetamine (used for ADHD or narcolepsy), that could mean your heart races more, your blood pressure climbs higher, and you may feel jittery, anxious, or overheated. In serious cases the combination has been tied to dangerously high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and other harmful reactions.

Keep in mind that ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason, so I wouldn't recommend it at all. If you're taking amphetamine and considering anything stimulant-like, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can help you stay safe.

What Is Amphetamine Used For?

Brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER

Amphetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older. Adzenys XR-ODT, Dyanavel XR, and the amphetamine extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulations are specifically approved for ADHD in this age group.

Amphetamine Sulfate tablets and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate tablets) are also approved for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness) and as a short-term aid in a calorie-restricted weight-loss program for exogenous obesity (weight gain from external factors like overeating) in patients who have not responded to other approaches.
