First things first: ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, especially if you're on cyclosporine. The specific concern here is your liver. Cyclosporine can be hard on the liver on its own, and ephedra has been tied to many reports of liver injury. Put them together and the worry is that the harm to your liver could add up.

To be fair, this particular interaction is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than studies of the two combined. Still, with cyclosporine being a drug we watch closely, I wouldn't take chances. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything new.

What Is Cyclosporine Used For?

Brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, Verkazia, Vevye

Cyclosporine is prescribed to help prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted kidney, liver, or heart. It is often used alongside other immunosuppressive medicines as part of a full transplant care plan.

It is also used for adults with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis that hasn't responded well enough to methotrexate, and for adults with severe plaque psoriasis who haven't had success with other standard treatments.
