Ephedra and Terbutaline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Terbutaline

Terbutaline falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, large amounts of ephedra might increase the cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing ephedra with terbutaline: they push on the same gas pedal. Terbutaline is a beta-agonist that relaxes your airways, but it can also nudge up your heart rate. Ephedra is a stimulant that does much the same thing to your heart and blood pressure. Stack them together and those effects can add up, so you might notice a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, tremor, anxiety, or higher blood pressure.

This concern is based on how these drugs work, not on hard studies, so think of it as a sensible caution rather than a proven danger. Still, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. I would not combine them. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer choices.

Ephedra (ma huang) contains powerful stimulants like ephedrine that affect the heart and nervous system. Because it has been linked to serious harms including high blood pressure, stroke, and death, it is banned for use in dietary supplements in the U.S. and many other countries. We do not recommend using ephedra-containing supplements; talk to your pharmacist or doctor about safer, approved options.

About Terbutaline

What Is Terbutaline Used For?

Brand names: Bricanyl, Brethine, Bricanyl Injection, Bricanyl Turbohaler

Terbutaline Sulfate — available as both a tablet and a subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection — is used to prevent and reverse bronchospasm (sudden tightening of the airways) in adults and children 12 years and older. It is indicated for people with asthma and for reversible bronchospasm associated with bronchitis and emphysema.

Both Terbutaline Sulfate Tablets and Terbutaline Sulfate Injection share these approved uses. The injection form acts more quickly and is given by a healthcare provider under the skin, while the tablet form is taken by mouth on a regular schedule during waking hours.
