Ephedra and Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Major

QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS

Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with combining these two. Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil) is a long-acting injectable antipsychotic that can, on its own, slightly stretch out a part of your heart's electrical cycle called the QT interval. Ephedra is a powerful stimulant that has also been shown to cause EKG changes, including QT prolongation, even at recommended doses. Stacking them together could add up and raise the risk of a dangerous irregular heartbeat.

To be clear, this is largely a theoretical, additive risk, and the evidence isn't super strong. But ephedra is banned from U.S. supplements for good reason, and Aristada stays in your body for weeks after each shot. Please don't use any ephedra product without first talking to your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aripiprazole Lauroxil page

“Aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada) is a long-acting antipsychotic injection, and because each dose keeps working for weeks, a bad supplement pairing cannot be undone by skipping a pill. So the 16 major-rated entries among its 233 interactions on file deserve to be understood first.”
