Aripiprazole falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the heart of it: aripiprazole (Abilify) can slightly stretch out a part of your heartbeat called the QT interval. Ephedra, which contains ephedrine, is a strong stimulant that revs up your heart and can also affect that same QT interval. Stacking the two together may add up, and that raises the chance of a dangerous irregular heart rhythm. This isn't about ephedra changing how your body breaks down aripiprazole, it's about both nudging your heart in the same risky direction.

The evidence here is on the lighter side, but the potential outcome is serious, so I take it seriously. On top of that, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. Please don't change your Abilify, just talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

Aripiprazole treats several mental health conditions. It is approved for schizophrenia, acute manic and mixed episodes of Bipolar I Disorder, and as an add-on to antidepressants for Major Depressive Disorder.

It is also used for irritability linked to autistic disorder and for Tourette's disorder — in both children and adults depending on the condition.
