Desipramine falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the heart of it: desipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant that can, on its own, stretch out the heart's electrical reset time (what we call the QT interval). Ephedra is a strong stimulant that has caused EKG changes and a longer QT interval even in healthy people taking normal doses. Stack the two together and those effects can add up, which raises the risk of a dangerous, irregular heartbeat.

On top of that, ephedra's stimulant punch can push your heart rate and blood pressure higher, and desipramine can already cause a racing or pounding heart. That's a worrying combination. Ephedra is actually banned in U.S. supplements for safety reasons, so please don't use it. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options before changing anything.

Theoretically, ephedra might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that ephedra induces CYP1A2 and increases the clearance of CYP1A2 substrates such as caffeine.

Here's the theory behind this pairing. Desipramine (Norpramin) is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Some animal studies hint that ephedra can speed that enzyme up. If that holds true in people, your body might break down desipramine a bit faster, leaving lower levels in your blood. The worry there is that your depression treatment could work less well over time.

Honestly though, the bigger concern isn't this enzyme detail. Ephedra is a strong stimulant and desipramine itself can raise heart rate and blood pressure, so stacking them risks racing heartbeat, jitteriness, and dangerous spikes in blood pressure. Ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything like this.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
