Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: amphetamine sulfate is itself a powerful stimulant. It speeds up your heart, bumps up your blood pressure, and revs up your nervous system. Ephedra (and its main compound ephedrine) does almost the exact same thing. So we're not talking about one changing how the other is broken down. We're talking about two strong stimulants pushing in the same direction at the same time, and that stacking is the worry.

Together they can really crank up your heart rate and blood pressure, and may bring on chest pounding, anxiety, tremors, trouble sleeping, or in serious cases dangerous heart rhythms or stroke. To be honest, this is mostly based on case reports rather than big studies, but the risk lines up with what we know about both. Ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements anyway, so please don't combine them and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amphetamine Sulfate page

“Amphetamine sulfate (Benzedrine, Evekeo ODT) is a prescription stimulant, and most of what earns this list genuine respect is more stimulation piled on top of it. The riskiest entries, ephedra chief among them, add to its effects on heart rate and blood pressure, and even everyday caffeine, whether from coffee, tea, or cola nut, pushes…”

Ephedra (ma huang) contains powerful stimulants like ephedrine that affect the heart and nervous system. We do not recommend using ephedra-containing supplements; talk to your pharmacist or doctor about safer, approved options.
