Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin XR
Metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Weight Watchers Diet interacts with.
Hypoglycemia has occurred in a small number of patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking antidiabetes medications and following the Weight Watchers Diet. Dose adjustments of antidiabetes medications might be necessary for some people.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: the Weight Watchers (WW) program doesn't react chemically with your Metformin XR. There's no enzyme or active ingredient at play here. Instead, the connection is about food and weight. When you eat fewer points and start dropping pounds, your body often needs less help controlling blood sugar, and your metformin may end up working a little stronger than before.
For most people on metformin alone, low blood sugar is uncommon, so the risk here is modest. Still, keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or sudden hunger, especially if you skip meals. Don't change your dose on your own. Just give your doctor or pharmacist a heads-up that you're starting WW so they can check your numbers and adjust if needed.

This page covers Weight Watchers Diet only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Metformin XR page lists 256 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 215 moderate · 39 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin XR page
“Siberian cocklebur stands alone at the top of this list; its seeds have caused severe low blood sugar in humans, and no one taking metformin XR (Glucophage XR) should use it. Almost everything else here, 239 of the 256 ingredients, affects blood sugar too, so this list earns real caution.”

Natural Medicines records Metformin XR as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Weight Watchers Diet — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
