Here's the thing to know: this combination product already contains aspirin, which thins the blood by keeping platelets from sticking together. Willow bark works in a similar way because it turns into salicylic acid, a close cousin of aspirin. So you'd essentially be stacking two aspirin-like blood thinners on top of each other.

On paper, that could nudge up your bleeding risk. Think easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset and stomach bleeding. To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, and willow bark's effect is weaker than aspirin's. Still, since you're already getting aspirin in this medicine, I'd run the willow bark by your pharmacist or doctor before doubling up.

ASPIRIN

Theoretically, willow bark might increase the effects and adverse effects of aspirin.
Willow bark contains salicin, a plant salicylate. It might have an additive effect when taken with other salicylate-containing drugs such as aspirin.

Here's the simple version: your medicine already contains aspirin, which is a salicylate. Willow bark contains salicin, a natural cousin that your body turns into salicylic acid, basically the same family. So taking both at once is a bit like stacking two aspirin-type doses on top of each other. This is mostly a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not a long list of real cases, but the logic is sound.

What could that look like? More of aspirin's usual downsides: stomach upset, heartburn, and a higher chance of bleeding or easy bruising. Ringing in the ears can show up with high salicylate levels too. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I would run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you have stomach or bleeding issues.

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Willow Bark

What is Willow Bark?

  • Low back pain
  • Osteoarthritis joint pain
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • General aches and inflammation

Willow bark is a traditional plant remedy that contains salicin, a compound related to aspirin, and is most often used for pain and inflammation. Some evidence suggests it may modestly help low back pain and joint pain, but the research is limited and the right dose is not well standardized. Because it acts like aspirin, people with aspirin allergies, bleeding problems, or who are pregnant should be cautious and talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
