Xanthan Gum and Beclomethasone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the good news first: most people use beclomethasone as an inhaler for asthma, and that goes straight into your lungs, not through your stomach. If that's how you take it, xanthan gum in your food or thickened drinks really won't touch it.

The interaction we have on file is only a theoretical one for oral medicines. Because xanthan gum forms a gel and slows how fast your stomach empties, it could in theory change how much of a swallowed pill gets absorbed. This is based on pharmacology, not real-world reports, so it's a minor concern. If you ever take an oral steroid form, a simple fix is to take your medicine first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before the xanthan gum. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
