Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version when it comes to your blood pressure pill eplerenone (Inspra) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and slows how fast things move through your gut. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill like eplerenone and slow down or slightly reduce how much your body absorbs. If less gets absorbed, your blood pressure control could be a touch weaker.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause real problems with eplerenone. The easy fix is timing. Take your eplerenone first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having the xanthan gum. If you use it daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Eplerenone Used For?

Eplerenone treats two conditions. First, it is used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medicines.

Second, eplerenone is used to improve survival in stable adults who have heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) — meaning the heart pumps less blood than normal — following an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
