Perampanel falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Zizyphus interacts with.

Theoretically, zizyphus might cause additive sedative effects when taken with CNS depressants.
Some animal research has found that various parts of zizyphus have sedative effects. However, other animal research shows that zizyphus plant extract does not alter sleep parameters when used in combination with pentobarbital.

Here's the simple version. Perampanel (Fycompa) already causes drowsiness as one of its most common effects, along with dizziness, trouble with balance, and sometimes feeling foggy or irritable. Zizyphus (jujube) has been used traditionally as a calming, sleep-promoting remedy, so the concern is that stacking the two could add up and leave you more sedated than you expect.

I want to be straight with you though: this is a theoretical caution. It comes from animal studies, and even those are mixed, with some showing no real sedative boost. We don't have solid human proof here. Eating jujube fruit as food is unlikely to matter much; a concentrated supplement is more of a question mark. Before adding it, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and never adjust your seizure medicine on your own.

Perampanel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, zizyphus might decrease the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal research shows that zizyphus induces CYP1A2 enzymes. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with Fycompa (perampanel) and zizyphus (jujube). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break perampanel down, and lab and animal studies suggest zizyphus may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in people, perampanel could clear out a little faster and work less well, which for a seizure medicine could mean less protection against seizures. Perampanel is not a prodrug, so this points toward a weaker effect, not stronger side effects.

The good news is this is only a theoretical concern from animal data and hasn't been shown in humans. Food amounts of jujube are very unlikely to matter. Still, because missed seizure control is serious, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated supplement.

The fruit is a nutritious food, but human evidence for its medicinal benefits is limited and mostly preliminary. If you want to try a supplement form, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

About Perampanel

What Is Perampanel Used For?

Brand name: Fycompa

Perampanel — available as Fycompa and in generic forms — is used to treat partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain) in patients with epilepsy aged 4 years and older. Both the tablet and oral suspension forms carry this indication.

Perampanel tablets and oral suspension are also approved as add-on (adjunctive) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures involving the whole brain at once) in patients with epilepsy aged 12 years and older. Fycompa oral suspension and tablet share both indications.
