Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This tablet contains two active ingredients: 5-HTP and stevia leaf extract. The 5-HTP is an amino acid precursor that your body uses to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood and sleep.
Stevia leaf extract is a natural sweetener derived from the stevia plant — it's used here to flavor or sweeten the tablet without adding calories. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients (lactose, natural peppermint flavor, and acacia gum) that serve as fillers, binders, or flavoring.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For 5-HTP, the evidence shows it's possibly effective for depression — some studies support its use, though more research would strengthen the case. For other conditions like panic disorder, cerebellar ataxia (a movement disorder), and Alzheimer's disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't.
For stevia leaf extract, the evidence isn't solid enough to rate it for managing diabetes, high blood pressure, or weight — preliminary research exists but isn't conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
5-HTP is generally well tolerated over the short term. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and abdominal pain — these tend to be dose-dependent and may ease after the first week.
Rare serious side effects include hallucinations, mania, and severe gut complaints. The safety data advises against using 5-HTP during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Stevia appears well tolerated in food amounts. High-dose stevia supplements lack solid safety data, so caution is warranted.
Minor side effects reported include bloating, dizziness, headache, muscle pain, nausea, and numbness; most resolve within the first week. Rare allergic reactions have been reported.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you're on serotonergic drugs like SSRIs or SNRIs (antidepressants), migraine medications like triptans, or any other serotonin-affecting drugs — Moderate risk. Also double-check CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications), carbidopa for Parkinson's disease, blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, or lithium — all carry documented interactions with one or both ingredients.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
5-HTP may help if you're looking to support mood, but it works on serotonin and carries meaningful interactions with antidepressants and sedating drugs. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take any psychiatric or neurological medications.
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use the medication checker below to verify your prescriptions.

5-HTP 50 mg by Superior Source Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Superior Source's 5-HTP 50 mg does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain migraine drugs, and others that work on serotonin) — combining them with 5-HTP carries a Moderate risk of additive serotonergic effects, including serotonin syndrome and other serious side effects. The ingredient 5-HTP is also responsible here.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll want to check before combining this with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, alcohol), as 5-HTP can add to their drowsiness effect (Moderate severity). Carbidopa (Lodosyn), a Parkinson's medication, also pairs with 5-HTP at Moderate severity — the combination can increase serotonergic side effects including agitation, rapid speech, and anxiety.
The stevia leaf extract in this product carries Minor interactions with blood pressure drugs (antihypertensive agents) and diabetes medications, though the blood pressure effect is uncertain in the research. Stevia may also theoretically increase lithium levels (Moderate severity) if you're on that medication, since stevia might reduce how your body clears it.

For each ingredient in 5-HTP 50 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
5-HTP
Carbidopa (Lodosyn)
Combining 5-HTP and carbidopa can increase the risk of serotonergic side effects.
Carbidopa is sometimes used with 5-HTP to minimize peripheral 5-HTP metabolism and boost the amount that reaches the brain. However, this combination might also increase the risk of some side effects including hypomania, restlessness, rapid speech, anxiety, insomnia, and aggressiveness. Combining carbidopa and 5-HTP might also increase the risk of scleroderma-like skin changes due to elevated serotonin levels.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Serotonergic Drugs
Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.
Stevia leaf extract
Lithium
Theoretically, stevia might decrease clearance and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that stevia extracts might have diuretic activity. Theoretically, increased reabsorption of lithium along with sodium might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, stevia might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when combined with antidiabetes drugs.
Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes suggests that taking a single dose of stevia extract 1000 mg reduces postprandial blood glucose levels when taken with a meal. However, other clinical research in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes suggests that taking stevioside 250 mg three times daily does not significantly affect blood glucose levels or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) after three months of treatment.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining stevia or stevia constituents with antihypertensive agents might increase the risk of hypotension.
Stevia extract and stevioside might lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. However, other clinical research suggests that stevioside does not significantly lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
