Here's the thing to keep in mind with Tuzistra XR: it already packs two ingredients that can make you sleepy. Codeine is an opioid cough medicine, and chlorpheniramine is a sedating antihistamine. Both can cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, dizziness, and that foggy, slowed-down feeling on their own.

5-HTP can also cause drowsiness in its own right. So the worry here is simple addition: stacking 5-HTP on top of this medicine could leave you more sleepy or sluggish than you'd expect. This concern is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies, so don't panic. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and avoid driving until you know how the mix affects you.

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

2 of 2

Chlorpheniramine Polistirex, Codeine Polistirex also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Tuzistra XR is a cough syrup that combines codeine with the antihistamine chlorpheniramine. The codeine piece works mainly on opioid receptors, but chlorpheniramine actually nudges serotonin upward a bit, much like 5-HTP does. So if you take both together, you're stacking two things that raise serotonin activity.

Realistically, this is a theoretical concern based on how these ingredients work, not something commonly reported. Still, it's worth knowing the signs of too much serotonin: agitation, fast heartbeat, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. On top of that, both codeine and this combo can already cause sleepiness, so adding 5-HTP may leave you feeling extra drowsy. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.
