Tuzistra XR pairs codeine, an opioid cough medicine, with chlorpheniramine, a sedating antihistamine. Both calm down the central nervous system, and so does the alcohol in beer. Stack them together and the slowing effects pile up. You may feel much drowsier, dizzy, or foggy, and in a worse case your breathing can become dangerously slow and shallow. That risk of slowed breathing is the one that really worries me with opioids like codeine.

This is a well-recognized, major interaction. Even a single beer can deepen the sedation, so it isn't really about how much you drink. Please don't change anything on your own, but do talk with your pharmacist or doctor about avoiding alcohol while you're taking this medicine.

Here's the thing with Tuzistra XR: it pairs codeine (a narcotic that slows your breathing and makes you drowsy) with chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine that's also sedating on its own). Drinking beer on top of that is a real concern. According to what's on file, large amounts of alcohol can slow how your body clears narcotics, so the codeine can hang around longer and hit harder.

What that looks like in real life: heavier sedation, dizziness, confusion, and most importantly slowed breathing, which can become dangerous. Even setting metabolism aside, alcohol and these two medicines all calm the nervous system, so the drowsiness stacks up. Please don't drink beer while taking this, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.
