Thompson's 5 Strain Acidophilus is a capsule containing 5 probiotic bacterial strains: L-Acidophilus, Lactobacillus spp., L. bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus, and B. bifidum.
These are live, active microorganisms meant to support digestive health. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (maltodextrin, gelatin, cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate) that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for this product's effectiveness is mixed and depends on the condition. L-Acidophilus and B. bifidum are both rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
B. bifidum is also possibly effective for respiratory tract infections. For many other conditions—including acne, hay fever, asthma, common cold, and several others—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate these strains.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotic strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, because they contain live microorganisms, there is a small theoretical concern they could cause infection in people with weakened immune systems or severe illness.
Rare cases of serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis, and related conditions) have been reported, mostly in critically ill patients or those with central lines. Common mild side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea can occur when taking probiotics, though these are uncommon.
For pregnancy, L-Acidophilus, S. Thermophilus, and B. bifidum are rated possibly safe, but supplement safety in pregnancy is not well studied—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use.

L-Acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
L. bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
B. bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
