Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know: this interaction runs in one direction. Dalbavancin (Dalvance) is a powerful antibiotic that doesn't tell the difference between bad bacteria and the friendly ones in your probiotic. So if you take your Bifidobacterium bifidum while the antibiotic is active in your body, the dalbavancin may simply kill off a good chunk of those live organisms, which makes the probiotic less helpful.

The good news is that your dalbavancin keeps working just fine. It's the probiotic that loses out, not your treatment. Keep in mind dalbavancin is long-acting and lingers in your system for weeks after a dose, so spacing them apart by a couple hours won't fully fix it. This is a theory based on how these drugs behave, not proven harm. If you'd like to keep taking your probiotic, ask your pharmacist about timing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalbavancin Hydrochloride page

“Everything on the dalbavancin (Dalvance) interaction list points in one direction. No supplement on file makes this IV skin-infection antibiotic dangerous or weaker; instead, dalbavancin can kill the live organisms in probiotic products, so the supplement is the one that loses.”

  • Infant gut health

Bifidobacterium bifidum is a 'friendly' bacteria (probiotic) that naturally lives in the human gut and is taken to support digestion and gut balance. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but anyone who is seriously ill or has a weakened immune system should check with a doctor first.

About Dalbavancin Injection

What Is Dalbavancin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Dalvance

Dalvance (dalbavancin) injection is approved to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in adults and children from birth through age 17. These are serious bacterial skin infections that require treatment with an antibacterial given by IV.

It works against specific Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains, known as MRSA), several Streptococcus species, and vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis. It should only be used when one of these susceptible bacteria is proven or strongly suspected to be causing the infection.
