HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Acidophilus 200 mg by Nature's Answer
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live probiotic (beneficial bacteria) at 200 mg per capsule. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, rice flour, and calcium silicate — which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for L. acidophilus is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For atopic disease (allergic or inflammatory skin and immune conditions), the evidence suggests it's likely ineffective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects are mild and rare — a small number of people report gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea when taking it alongside other probiotics.
There's a theoretical concern that in people with certain immune or digestive system conditions, the live bacteria could in rare cases cause infection, though this is uncommon. Because data are limited, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main medication type to watch before you take this product — they can lower how well the probiotic works. Separate your antibiotic dose from this supplement by several hours.
Run your exact medications through the checker on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Acidophilus 200 mg works best for people looking to support digestive health, particularly if they're dealing with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis. If you take antibiotics, space them out from this supplement by a few hours so the medication doesn't kill off the beneficial bacteria.
Talk to your pharmacist about the right timing and whether it's a fit for you.
