This product has two active ingredients. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live beneficial bacterium (probiotic) that supports digestive and gut health.
Apple pectin is a soluble fiber derived from apples that may help support cholesterol levels and digestion. The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — modified cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — which are standard fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis based on available evidence. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease and has insufficient evidence to rate for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
The apple pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), but evidence for prediabetes and radiation exposure is insufficient to rate. Keep in mind that "possibly effective" means the evidence is suggestive but not definitive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Orally, it may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects like gas, bloating, abdominal pain, or diarrhea, but these are uncommon.
In rare cases, live Lactobacillus organisms have been associated with serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, abscess, or endocarditis), though this typically occurs in patients with compromised immune systems or translocation from other body sites. Apple pectin is generally well tolerated and diarrhea, gas, loose stools, and mild cramps are the most common side effects.
Rarely, pectin may trigger allergic reactions including anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe in pregnancy; for pectin, dietary amounts are likely safe but concentrated supplement use hasn't been well studied in pregnancy — check with your doctor.
Pectin in dietary amounts is fine while breastfeeding, but supplement safety data during lactation is limited.

Lovastatin (a cholesterol drug) is also affected moderately — pectin may reduce how much of it gets into your system, which could weaken its cholesterol-lowering effect.
Additionally, antibiotic drugs in general carry a moderate concern with the Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product: taking antibiotics at the same time may kill off the live organisms, reducing the supplement's potential benefit.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Apple Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
