Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though you should still check with your doctor before starting. The main rare side effects are gastrointestinal—belly discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea—and there are very rare case reports of serious infection (bacteremia or sepsis), mostly in people with weakened immune systems.

Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium bifidum are also generally well tolerated in healthy people but warrant caution if you're seriously ill or immune-compromised; rare gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal pain and gas have been reported.
