Not established
The evidence we hold shows insufficient reliable data to rate agmatine for any of the conditions it's marketed for — alcohol use disorder, Alzheimer disease, anxiety, athletic performance, autism spectrum disorder, and bipolar disorder. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research we've reviewed isn't conclusive enough yet to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Short-term use of agmatine appears generally well tolerated in people. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials are diarrhea, indigestion (dyspepsia), and nausea — and they tend to appear within the first few days and resolve once you stop taking it.
One small study found mild-to-moderate diarrhea and nausea in 3 out of 24 people taking 3.56 grams daily. Long-term safety in humans hasn't been well studied, so caution is warranted with extended use.
The safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not sufficient, so it's best to avoid this product if you're pregnant or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
