What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), at 500 micrograms per tablet. B12 is an essential vitamin your body needs for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, vegetable stearate, and silica — which help hold the tablet together and aid absorption.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
B12 is effective for treating B12 deficiency and Imerslund-Grasbeck disease, a rare genetic condition that impairs B12 absorption. It's also likely effective for cyanide poisoning.
The evidence is less established for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles), though some data suggests it may help those conditions too.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
B12 is generally well-tolerated by mouth, and your body removes excess through urine, so there's no upper limit to worry about. It's considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding at normal recommended doses — in fact, it's needed during both.
Allergic reactions are rare but possible; they may show up as rash or itching. A very small number of people correcting severe B12 deficiency have experienced dangerous drops in potassium levels, but this is extremely uncommon and usually occurs with injectable B12 rather than oral supplements.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take metformin for diabetes, mention this supplement to your pharmacist so they can monitor your B12 levels. No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check, but always verify your complete medication list with the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is right for you if you have a B12 deficiency, can't absorb it well (like with Imerslund-Grasbeck disease), or take metformin long-term and want to maintain healthy B12 levels. If you take metformin or any other medications, check with your pharmacist first — especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of severe anemia.
