The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, a vegetable-based capsule material, and maltodextrin.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B12 in this product is effective for treating B12 deficiency and Imerslund-Grasbeck disease, a rare inherited disorder affecting B12 absorption. It's also likely effective for cyanide poisoning when given as an antidote.
The evidence is possibly effective for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia, a nerve pain that sometimes follows shingles, though the data here is less robust.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
B12 is generally very well tolerated. Your body removes excess B12 in the urine, so there's no established upper limit of how much is too much.
The most common side effect with injections is a reaction at the injection site; oral forms like this one are even gentler. Very rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or itching have been reported — theoretically linked to the cobalt in the B12 molecule, and one case of contact dermatitis has been documented in someone with a cobalt allergy.
A rare serious effect is severe low potassium (hypokalemia) when B12 corrects a certain type of anemia, though this is exceptionally uncommon. B12 is considered safe and is actually needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding at normal recommended amounts — follow your provider's guidance on dosing.
