Black Cherry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Black Cherry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: black cherry concentrate. Black cherry is a fruit used in traditional preparations, and here it's been concentrated into capsule form.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, maltodextrin, vegetable cellulose capsule material, and calcium carbonate—which are fillers and binders that hold the product together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We hold no effectiveness data for black cherry concentrate in our records, so we can't tell you what it's proven to do or how well it works for any particular use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Black cherry is considered safe in the small amounts found in commercial cough products. However, the plant contains compounds that can break down into cyanide, and large amounts pose a real risk.
One documented case involved a 56-year-old woman who consumed roughly 300 grams of wild cherries steeped in alcohol and developed severe cyanide poisoning—headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, breathing difficulty, and eventually coma. Deaths from this have been reported.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy. There isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it in that situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Black cherry concentrate may slow the breakdown of drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (a Moderate interaction). This includes cholesterol medications like lovastatin and antifungal drugs like ketoconazole and itraconazole.
Check your exact prescriptions with the tool on this page before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Black cherry concentrate is marketed as a supplement, but the safety data raises real concerns about cyanide toxicity at higher doses—and we don't have effectiveness data to weigh against that risk. If you're pregnant, the safety information advises against it.
Before starting, check your medications with our tool, especially if you take cholesterol or antifungal drugs.

Black Cherry by GNC SuperFoods Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC SuperFoods Black Cherry contains black cherry concentrate, which in lab studies shows it may slow how your body breaks down certain medications through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4.
Theoretically, this could raise levels of those drugs in your bloodstream—but this hasn't actually been reported in people taking it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The drugs potentially affected include cholesterol medications like lovastatin, antifungal drugs like ketoconazole and itraconazole, and others metabolized the same way. We list the full interaction as Moderate severity because the enzyme effect is documented in vitro, even though human cases haven't surfaced yet.
Almost 633 individual medications are processed through CYP3A4, so the theoretical pool is large. Before starting this product, run your exact medications through the checker below—especially if you take statins, antifungals, or any drug your doctor said has a narrow safety window.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
