HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Black Elderberry 450 mg by HTP Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: black elderberry extract and black elderberry, both from the fruit of the elderberry plant. Together they make up the 450 mg dose.
The product also includes an inactive ingredient called Cyclosome Technology with Phospholipids, which is used to help the body absorb the active ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for black elderberry is insufficient to establish that it works for the conditions listed in our data — hay fever, heart disease, chronic fatigue, COPD, cognition, and respiratory tract infections. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the studies we have aren't strong enough to say one way or the other.
If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly prepared (cooked) elderberry extracts are generally well tolerated. Raw or unripe berries, leaves, bark, and seeds contain compounds that can cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, numbness, and confusion — cooking destroys these toxins.
There is one case report of autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation) in a person who took elderberry for years; the person recovered after stopping it. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so it's best to avoid elderberry supplements — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and want to use it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your pharmacist if you take any immunosuppressants (medications that suppress your immune system, commonly used after transplant or for certain autoimmune conditions) or pazopanib (a cancer drug). Both carry Moderate interaction ratings with this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Black elderberry is generally well tolerated when prepared from ripe fruit, but it's not your choice if you take immunosuppressants or pazopanib — those interactions are real. The evidence for what it actually treats is too thin to call it proven.
If you're healthy and taking no medications in those categories, this may be worth a try, but check your exact prescriptions with a pharmacist first.
