Calamus carries serious safety concerns. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and lactation — calamus may affect the uterus and contains potentially toxic compounds, and there is no safety data for nursing.
Additionally, some forms of calamus contain beta-asarone, a possible carcinogen that the FDA has banned from food. The most common side effects reported are nausea and vomiting when taken orally.
Rare but serious effects include cancer and intestinal paralysis, and elevated heart rate (tachycardia) has also been reported. Because calamus is likely unsafe for use and may cause cancer, these risks warrant careful consideration before use.

It inhibits two liver enzymes (CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 substrates) that clear many common medications, which can raise drug levels in your body and increase the risk of side effects.
Additionally, it may interfere with anticholinergic drugs (used for certain conditions like overactive bladder) by reducing their effectiveness, and conversely may boost the effects of cholinergic drugs (used for myasthenia gravis and other conditions). Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking calamus with other antihypertensive medications might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that calamus decreases the rate and strength of the heartbeat, which might lower blood pressure. use with caution.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of cholinergic drugs and calamus might have an additive effect and increase the risk of cholinergic effects.

Theoretically, concurrent use of CNS depressants and calamus might have an additive effect and increase the risk of sedative effects.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, calamus might potentiate the effects and adverse effects of MAOIs.
Some reports suggest that calamus increases the effects of MAOIs.

H2-Blockers
