Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: copper and a chlorophyll-copper complex. Copper is an essential mineral your body needs for nerve and bone health, and is particularly important for treating copper deficiency.
The chlorophyll-copper complex is a semi-synthetic form of the green pigment found in plants, included to support your body's natural cleansing processes. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — safflower oil, cellulose, candelilla wax, and peppermint oil — which help deliver and flavor the supplement.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for this product is mixed. Copper is likely effective for treating copper deficiency, but the data suggests it may be possibly ineffective for Alzheimer disease.
For the chlorophyll-copper complex, the evidence we hold shows it's possibly ineffective for urinary odor. For other uses listed — including acne, cancer, constipation, flatulence, and low white blood cells — the evidence isn't established well enough to rate.
Talk with your pharmacist if you're considering this for a specific health goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Copper is safe in the amounts found in food and standard supplements, but excess can build up and become toxic — stick to recommended doses and avoid high-dose supplements on your own. Copper is needed during pregnancy, but stay within recommended amounts and don't take high-dose supplements without medical guidance.
The chlorophyll-copper complex is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but long-term safety data are limited. Avoid this product during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety data to know it's okay.
Rarely, copper can cause contact skin rashes. There's also a report that chlorophyll may cause photosensitization (abnormal skin reactions to sun) or, in very rare cases, pseudoporphyria (a condition with blistering skin).
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before starting if you take penicillamine (used for Wilson disease and some forms of arthritis) — copper reduces how much you absorb, and you may need to separate doses. If you use oral contraceptives or photosensitizing medications (drugs that trigger sun-sensitivity reactions), we need to review this with you too.
Also mention any diabetes to your doctor, since people with diabetes tend to have higher copper levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you have a documented copper deficiency. If you take penicillamine for Wilson disease, birth control pills, or any medication that makes your skin sensitive to sunlight, check with us first.
There's limited evidence it works for other common uses. Talk to your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any prescription medications.

Chlorophyll 50 mg by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson Chlorophyll 50 mg contains copper and a chlorophyll-copper complex, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
Copper poses a Moderate interaction with penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen), a chelating agent used mainly for Wilson disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Copper binds to penicillamine and reduces how much your body absorbs it, which may weaken the drug's effect — if you take both, separate them by at least 2 hours.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Copper also carries a Minor interaction with oral contraceptives (birth control pills). Studies show that long-term use of hormonal contraceptives can raise copper levels in your blood by an average of 57 mcg/dL, often pushing levels above the normal range.
The chlorophyll-copper complex presents a Moderate concern with photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin react badly to sun exposure (such as certain antibiotics, NSAIDs, and thiazide diuretics). Chlorophyll can add to that photosensitivity risk.
No other interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check. Altogether, these interactions span 365 individual medications.

Chlorophyll-Copper Complex
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyllin with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. Orally, chlorophyll has also been associated with the development of pseudoporphyria in multiple case reports.
Copper
Penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen)
Theoretically, taking copper with penicillamine might decrease the absorption of penicillamine; separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
Copper chelates penicillamine, which decreases its absorption and may reduce its clinical effects.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking copper with contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and toxic effects of copper.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.
