Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorophyllin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyllin with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. Orally, chlorophyll has also been associated with the development of pseudoporphyria in multiple case reports.

Here's the thing to know about alectinib (Alecensa): it can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight on its own. Sunburn that happens faster and easier is a known side effect of this lung cancer medication. Chlorophyllin has also been linked, mostly in case reports, to a similar light-sensitivity reaction. So the worry here isn't about chlorophyllin changing how your body processes alectinib. It's that both can make your skin touchier in the sun, and stacking them could add up.

This is a theoretical concern, not a proven one, so don't panic. But it's smart to protect yourself either way: wear sunscreen, cover up, and limit strong sun. Before adding chlorophyllin, run it by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
