HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorophyllin 100 mg by Life Extension
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Life Extension's Chlorophyllin 100 mg contains one active ingredient: chlorophyllin, a lab-made form of chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants. The capsule also includes microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, silica, and stearate as inactive ingredients (binding and flow agents).
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for chlorophyllin is mixed and limited. The data we have rates it as possibly ineffective for urinary odor.
For acne, cancer prevention, constipation, flatulence, and low white blood cell count (leukopenia), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorophyllin is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality evidence and long-term safety data are limited. The main concern is photosensitization — the drug can make your skin more reactive to sunlight — and rare case reports link it to pseudoporphyria (a skin condition that mimics porphyria) after oral use.
Topical chlorophyll creams have also caused dermatitis in some people. There isn't enough reliable safety data to use chlorophyllin during pregnancy, so it's best to avoid it.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown; the safer choice is to skip it if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check whether you take any photosensitizing drugs before starting this supplement. These include certain antibiotics, some blood pressure medications, and NSAIDs.
Your pharmacist can tell you if any of your medications fall into this category.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorophyllin may be worth considering only if you've talked with your pharmacist about your specific medications first — especially if you're on drugs that increase sun sensitivity. If you're pregnant, nursing, or spend a lot of time in the sun, this isn't the right pick for you.
Ask your pharmacist whether it makes sense for your situation.
