Berberine is generally well tolerated short-term but commonly causes digestive upset — abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and vomiting. You may also experience dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, or headache.

Berberine is unsafe in pregnancy (it can cross the placenta and harm newborns) and while breastfeeding (it passes into milk). Bergamot extract taken by mouth appears generally well tolerated short-term, though one person reported heartburn.

Berberine can increase serum levels of cyclosporine.
Berberine can reduce metabolism and increase serum levels of cyclosporine. Berberine might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which metabolizes cyclosporine.
