HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Cholestoril by Enzymatic Therapy
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Cholestoril contains one active ingredient: pantethine (sold here as Pantesin Pantethine), a compound your body converts to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). The tablet also includes several inactive ingredients — cellulose, modified cellulose, gum, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, soy lecithin, and carnauba wax — which serve as binders, fillers, and coating.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pantethine is mixed. It is rated possibly effective for hyperlipoproteinemia (a disorder of blood lipid levels).
For athletic performance and other forms of high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence is insufficient to establish whether it works. A few other uses, including pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN), lack reliable evidence as well.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pantethine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are mild gastrointestinal complaints: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort (upper abdominal pain), bloating, and flatulence.
Mild itching has been reported rarely. The product facts note that safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied, so caution is advised, and there is not enough reliable safety data to recommend it unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications — such as warfarin, apixaban, dabigatran, heparin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or other blood thinners — check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. Pantethine may theoretically increase your bleeding risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Cholestoril may be worth considering if you have hyperlipoproteinemia and your doctor agrees. If you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, confirm the combination with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Be aware that gastrointestinal side effects can occur, and long-term safety is not well established. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.
