What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chromium 200 mcg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium at 200 micrograms (mcg) per capsule. Chromium is a trace mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and insulin.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose and vegetable stearate — which are a binder and lubricant used in supplement manufacturing.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for chromium's effectiveness varies by condition. It's rated likely effective for chromium deficiency — which is rare but can happen.
For type 2 diabetes, the evidence suggests it's possibly effective, especially in people whose blood sugar isn't well controlled. For prediabetes, schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the research data we have rates chromium as possibly ineffective for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Serious side effects are rare but have included kidney and liver damage and very low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) — usually only reported at high doses taken long-term. Skin rashes and reactions have also been reported, particularly in people with an existing chromium allergy.
During pregnancy, small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are considered likely or possibly safe, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it. The same caution applies during breastfeeding — stick to dietary amounts unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications with the search tool on this page if you take antidiabetes drugs, insulin, levothyroxine (thyroid medication), NSAIDs like ibuprofen, or aspirin. Chromium interacts with all of these — it may increase your risk of low blood sugar with diabetes drugs and insulin, may reduce how well your thyroid medication works, and may increase chromium levels in your body with NSAIDs and aspirin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium 200 mcg may help with chromium deficiency and possibly with type 2 diabetes management. If you take diabetes medication, insulin, thyroid medication, or regular NSAIDs or aspirin, you need to check your specific drugs with your pharmacist before starting.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether this supplement fits your health plan.

Chromium 200 mcg by PureFormulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium 200 mcg by PureFormulas does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs and insulin.
Chromium may lower blood sugar levels and increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with these medications — especially in people whose diabetes isn't well controlled. If you take insulin or any diabetes medication, you'll want to check with your pharmacist before starting this supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (Synthroid and similar thyroid medications) — clinical research shows it may decrease how much levothyroxine your body absorbs, reducing its effectiveness by around 17%. Taking your thyroid medication and chromium at least several hours apart can help minimize this effect, but talk to your pharmacist about the best timing for your situation.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as aspirin, may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains. This is a minor interaction, but it's worth knowing about.
Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Chromium 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
