Chromium and Aspirin, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs)

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine

Aspirin, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) — the group Chromium interacts with.

NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to know about this combo product. The aspirin part is an NSAID, and NSAIDs (because they block prostaglandins) may help your body absorb and hold onto a bit more chromium. So in theory, taking aspirin alongside a chromium supplement could nudge your chromium levels up slightly. The effect goes the other direction from what people usually worry about: it's the chromium that may build up, not the medication.

This is rated minor and is based on pharmacology theory, not strong studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Watch for any extra blood sugar dips if you're diabetic, and keep an eye out for normal aspirin issues like stomach upset. Just loop in your pharmacist before starting chromium.

Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.

Here's the gist: this combination product contains aspirin, and the interaction we have on file goes in the other direction than you might expect. The concern isn't that chromium changes the medicine. Instead, lab and animal studies hint that the aspirin may help your body absorb a little more chromium, nudging chromium levels up slightly.

I want to be honest with you that this is theoretical and only based on animal research, so it's rated as a minor concern. There's no good evidence this causes a real problem in people. If you're using chromium for blood sugar, just keep an eye on your numbers and watch for low sugar signs like shakiness or sweating. As always, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
