HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg by Biotech Nutritions
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium, a mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and how your body uses insulin. The capsule also includes inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, rice flour, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together and deliver the chromium.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a balanced diet. For type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, the evidence is mixed — chromium is rated possibly effective for diabetes but possibly ineffective for prediabetes.
The data we hold shows no established evidence for schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, and mood changes.
Serious side effects are rare but have been reported, including kidney and liver damage and blood cell problems; one case involved anemia and low platelet counts in someone taking a higher dose (1200–2400 mcg daily) for several months. Skin reactions, including rashes and hives, can occur, especially in people with a contact allergy to chromium.
Small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are generally considered safe in pregnancy and lactation, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them, since safety data on higher doses is limited.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your pharmacist if you take insulin or antidiabetes drugs (risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine for thyroid (reduced absorption), NSAIDs or aspirin (increased chromium levels), or any other regular medications. We hold interaction data for these; run your complete list through the checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is worth considering if you have a chromium deficiency or are curious about its role in blood sugar control — but only after talking with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take insulin, antidiabetes drugs, levothyroxine, or NSAIDs. Anyone on these medications needs to coordinate timing and monitoring with their healthcare provider.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
