HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg by Windmill
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: chromium, which plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and insulin. The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, and silica — which are fillers and binders that help hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is rated Likely Effective for treating chromium deficiency — a genuine shortage of the nutrient in your body. For type 2 diabetes, the evidence is graded Possibly Effective, meaning some research suggests it may help, especially if your blood sugar is poorly controlled, but the evidence isn't strong enough to call it proven.
For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance) and other uses like schizophrenia and high blood pressure, the available evidence is rated Possibly Ineffective, so we don't have good data to suggest it works for those.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects include kidney or liver damage, a muscle breakdown condition called rhabdomyolysis, and low blood platelet counts. Skin rashes and itching have also been reported, especially in people with a contact allergy to chromium.
High or long-term doses carry more risk; the safety data on higher supplement doses is limited, so it's best to avoid extra chromium unless your doctor recommends it. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are generally acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications against these categories: insulin and other diabetes drugs (risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or other thyroid hormone replacements (reduced absorption), and NSAIDs or aspirin (which may raise chromium levels in your body).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have chromium deficiency or want to explore a Possibly Effective option for type 2 diabetes, this supplement is worth discussing with your doctor — especially since it can lower blood sugar. If you take levothyroxine, diabetes medication, insulin, NSAIDs, or aspirin, you must check with your pharmacist before starting, because the interactions could affect how well those drugs work or your blood sugar control.

Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg by Windmill Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg by Windmill does interact with several common medications, and the most important ones to check are diabetes drugs and thyroid medication.
If you take insulin or other diabetes medications, chromium may lower your blood sugar further and raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — your doctor may need to adjust your dose. Chromium can also bind to levothyroxine (Synthroid), the thyroid hormone replacement, and reduce how much your body absorbs; research shows a 17% drop in blood levels when the two are taken together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as aspirin, may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and raise chromium levels in your blood. These are listed as Minor interactions, but they're worth knowing about if you take them regularly.
Altogether, these interactions span 177 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions — especially if you're on insulin, diabetes pills, levothyroxine, or blood thinners.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 1000 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
