What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: chromium, supplied as chromium picolinate at 500 micrograms per capsule. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in how your body processes blood sugar and insulin.
The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients — magnesium stearate and rice flour — which are used to make the supplement stable and easy to swallow.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a varied diet. For type 2 diabetes, the evidence is mixed — some research suggests it may help lower blood glucose, especially in people whose diabetes isn't well controlled, but the evidence is rated only possibly effective.
For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence doesn't support its use — it's rated possibly ineffective for these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium picolinate is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Skin rashes and itching have also been reported, particularly in people with a contact allergy to chromium. Serious side effects are rare but have included kidney and liver damage, muscle breakdown, and low platelet counts — most occurred at high doses (1,200–2,400 mcg daily) taken long-term.
At the dose in this product (500 mcg), serious effects are uncommon, but high or long-term doses may carry risks. For pregnancy, the safety data is mixed: small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it.
During breastfeeding, the limited data suggest it is likely safe, but talk with your pharmacist if you have questions.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check if you're on insulin or antidiabetes drugs — chromium can make them work harder and increase the risk of low blood sugar. If you take levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), space it several hours away from this supplement.
NSAIDs and aspirin may increase chromium levels slightly, but that's a minor concern.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is a straightforward chromium supplement at a modest dose. It's most useful if you actually have a chromium deficiency, which is uncommon.
If you take insulin, diabetes medications, thyroid hormone, or pain relievers regularly, check with your pharmacist first — a couple of these interactions are worth planning around. Pregnant people should skip extra chromium unless a doctor says otherwise.

Chromium Picolinate 500 mcg by Karuna Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Karuna's Chromium Picolinate can interact with several common medications, so it's worth a quick check before you start.
The most serious concerns are with blood sugar medications: chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and insulin, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take either of these, your doctor may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely or adjust your dose.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts moderately with levothyroxine (the thyroid hormone replacement you may know as Synthroid). Taking chromium at the same time can reduce how much levothyroxine your body absorbs — research shows a 17% drop in blood levels when they're taken together.
The fix is simple: space them out by several hours.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and aspirin are minor concerns — they may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains, but the practical impact is small. Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 500 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
