ClearMood Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by AdvoCare
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking ClearMood against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
ClearMood contains three active ingredients. L-Theanine is an amino acid from tea leaves that research suggests may help with cognitive function, though evidence for anxiety and age-related mental decline is not yet reliable.
Magnolia Bark Extract comes from magnolia tree bark and appears possibly effective for gingivitis, though safety data in humans is limited. L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a compound your body makes naturally on the way to producing serotonin; it's possibly effective for depression but comes with more potential side effects and drug interactions than the other two ingredients.
The remaining ingredients — rice flour, gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — are inactive fillers and capsule material with no active role.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
L-Theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function, but evidence for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder is insufficient to rate. Magnolia Bark Extract is possibly effective for gingivitis; evidence for hay fever and dental plaque is insufficient.
5-HTP is possibly effective for depression, but the data is mixed on other conditions like panic disorder and Alzheimer's disease, and it appears possibly ineffective for Down syndrome. If you're considering this product for a specific concern, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. It can cause headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, and vivid dreams.
Magnolia Bark Extract seems well tolerated when taken by mouth, but human safety data is limited; rare trial reports included sexual dysfunction, shaking hands, and fatigue, though it's unclear if magnolia was responsible. 5-HTP is generally well tolerated short-term but commonly causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, fatigue, and dizziness — these are often dose-dependent and may improve with continued use.
Rare serious effects include aggression, hallucinations, and mania. Regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding: L-Theanine and 5-HTP both lack sufficient safety data, so it's best to avoid them during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Magnolia Bark Extract is rated unsafe in pregnancy due to concern it may affect the uterus, and there's no reliable safety data during breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about this product before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking ClearMood, check if you use serotonergic drugs — antidepressants, certain migraine medications, and others that boost serotonin (Moderate risk with 5-HTP). Also check sedating medications like sleep aids and opioids (Moderate risk from all three ingredients).
Blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate risk from Magnolia Bark). Blood pressure medications (Moderate risk from L-Theanine).
And carbidopa for Parkinson's disease (Moderate risk from 5-HTP). Use the medication checker below to look up your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
ClearMood has three ingredients with documented interactions across a broad range of medications. If you take any prescription drugs — especially blood pressure medications, blood thinners, sedatives, or antidepressants — you'll need to check them against the tool on this page.
The product itself is generally well tolerated short-term, but it's not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your pharmacist before you start.

ClearMood by AdvoCare Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
ClearMood by AdvoCare contains three active ingredients, and together they interact with a significant number of medications.
The most serious concern is L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) combined with serotonergic drugs — antidepressants, certain pain medications, and others that work on serotonin. This combination carries a Moderate risk of serotonin syndrome, a condition where serotonin levels get too high and cause agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, and in severe cases, dangerous changes in blood pressure and body temperature.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
All three ingredients can add to the effects of sedating medications (CNS depressants) — things like sleep aids, benzodiazepines, and opioids. L-Theanine and Magnolia Bark Extract both carry Moderate risk here, meaning the sedation could be stronger than expected.
5-HTP carries Moderate risk as well. Additionally, Magnolia Bark Extract may increase bleeding risk if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin — also a Moderate concern.
L-Theanine can lower blood pressure and might strengthen the effects of blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), a Moderate interaction. 5-HTP also has a specific Moderate interaction with carbidopa (Lodosyn), a Parkinson's medication, which can raise serotonergic side effects.
Althogether, these interactions span 665 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in ClearMood with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
L-5-Hydroxytryptophan
Carbidopa (Lodosyn)
Combining 5-HTP and carbidopa can increase the risk of serotonergic side effects.
Carbidopa is sometimes used with 5-HTP to minimize peripheral 5-HTP metabolism and boost the amount that reaches the brain. However, this combination might also increase the risk of some side effects including hypomania, restlessness, rapid speech, anxiety, insomnia, and aggressiveness. Combining carbidopa and 5-HTP might also increase the risk of scleroderma-like skin changes due to elevated serotonin levels.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Serotonergic Drugs
Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.
Magnolia Bark Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.
