What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Coltsfoot against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid extract contains one active ingredient: certified organic Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) dried leaf in extract form. The product also lists Menstruum as an inactive ingredient (the liquid base used in extraction).
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
No effectiveness ratings are documented in our data for Coltsfoot. We don't have evidence on file to tell you whether it works for any particular condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Coltsfoot carries a significant liver and lung safety concern. The plant naturally contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA)—compounds that can damage your liver and lungs.
With chronic use, these alkaloids have been linked to a serious condition called veno-occlusive disease, which can cause belly pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fluid buildup in the abdomen, and persistent liver enlargement within weeks. The safety data advises using only certified PA-free products, if at all.
The product is rated likely unsafe during pregnancy because of potential liver toxicity and harm to the baby, and likely unsafe while breastfeeding because these toxic alkaloids pass into breast milk.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Stop and check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (aspirin, warfarin, heparin, clopidogrel, and others), blood pressure medications, or CYP3A4 inducers like carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, or rifabutin. The bigger concern is coltsfoot's liver-toxic alkaloid content—mention that risk to your pharmacist or doctor alongside any medication check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're on blood thinners, blood pressure medications, or certain other drugs, you'll need to check this product against your exact prescriptions before starting. More importantly, coltsfoot naturally contains liver-toxic compounds even in organic form—the safety data recommends certified PA-free versions only, or avoiding it altogether.
Talk with your pharmacist before you use it, and definitely don't use it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Coltsfoot by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Coltsfoot is a single-ingredient liquid extract that has documented interactions with multiple medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel, and heparin): coltsfoot can slow down how your blood clots, raising the risk of bleeding if you're already on these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Coltsfoot may also interfere with blood pressure medications. If you take drugs to control high blood pressure, excessive doses of this extract could work against them.
Additionally, if you're on medications that induce cytochrome P450 3A4—drugs like carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, and rifabutin—there's a theoretical risk that coltsfoot's toxic alkaloid content could be converted to more harmful forms in your body.
Additionally, there's a broader safety issue here that overshadows drug interactions: coltsfoot naturally contains liver-toxic compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), even in this certified organic form. The safety data advises using only certified PA-free products, if at all.
Altogether, these interactions span 371 individual medications. Before you consider this product, check your exact medications with the tool on this page.

certified organic Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) dried leaf liquid extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Concomitant use might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Coltsfoot has been reported to inhibit platelet aggregation; avoid concomitant use. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, excessive doses of coltsfoot may interfere with antihypertensive or cardiovascular therapy.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Inducers
Hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites. Some drugs that induce CYP3A4 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin, rifabutin (Mycobutin), and others.
