Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Tekturna (aliskiren) lowers your blood pressure, and the worry is that taking large amounts of coltsfoot might tug your blood pressure in the opposite direction. This isn't about coltsfoot changing how your body breaks down aliskiren. It's more that big doses of the herb could work against your blood pressure goal, so your readings might not come down the way you and your doctor are hoping.

Honestly, the evidence here is thin, just theoretical and anecdotal, and only tied to excessive amounts. I'd gently point out a bigger concern: raw coltsfoot can contain liver-toxic compounds, so many pharmacists suggest avoiding it altogether. Before adding or stopping anything, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aliskiren page

“Aliskiren (Tekturna) has one job, keeping blood pressure down, and most of this list pulls on that same rope. Of the 227 supplements with an interaction on file, 119 have blood-pressure effects of their own, stacking with the drug until pressure drops too far (fish oil is a common one) or pushing back against it.”

About Coltsfoot

What is Coltsfoot?

Coltsfoot
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Bronchitis and congestion
  • Loosening mucus (expectorant)
  • Asthma symptoms

Coltsfoot is a traditional herb long used to soothe coughs and clear mucus, but solid human evidence for these uses is lacking. More importantly, the raw plant can contain liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so it carries real safety concerns and is best avoided unless you use a product certified to be free of these compounds.

About Aliskiren

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Brand name: Tekturna

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
